2010-11 Season Recap
The 2010-11 season saw the re-appearance of coach Eric Esser who would once again take over for coach Garrett Gaydosh, who led the young Bullet team all the way to the MDCHA finals the year before. Coach Esser knew the team was still fairly young, however he saw he had a good core of seniors, all of whom were on that championship team in 2008. Four of which ended up being captains with captain Matt Simeoni, South Jersey's Cory Jackmuff, Colin Gilmore, Eddie Rupp and rounded out with Michael Schopp. In fact these were the last players who remembered winning a championship and they all hoped to bring another back to Gburg.
Gettysburg started the season off very well with a number of great wins. Many freshman and newcomers showing their worth including Dylan Riddle, and Hunter Yale who led the freshman in scoring. However, one thing became evident early on. The Bullets would put up tons of shots, but the scores did not reflect the shot total. Certainly this was true in their longest road trip in team's history as they traveled to Erie, PA to take on Gannon University. Gettysburg put up almost fifty shots against Gannon but only slimly won the game by a 4-3 score with sophomore Kevin Cantele netting the game winner. Unfortunately this theme stayed with the Bullets as in their first MDCHA matchup against American University, where Gburg once again put up almost 50 shots but lost in overtime.
Despite this disappointing start in conference play, Gburg bounced back with some great wins against rival Dickinson, and newcomer Susquehanna University. However, they ran in to a surprising opponent in the University of Maryland, a team that last season barely scored 10 goals, was able to put up 9 against Gettysburg in their only meeting of 2010-11. Even though Gettysburg lost that game against Maryland they still took a first round bye in to the playoffs which they once again hosted at the Hershey Park arena as they did in their 2008 victory. But Gettysburg had a lot of pressure going in to the playoffs as they were the top seed and their only goaltender for the playoffs was freshman newcomer Jim Dornberger.
After quickly disposing of newcomer Wesley College, Gettysburg advanced once again to the MDCHA championship against the University of Maryland. Despite the great play of Gburg in the game, they found themselves falling in to the same pattern all year with an inability to finish off their opponents. The championship game went in to overtime, and even though all the momentum was in Gettysburg's favor, Maryland would be the ones who scored the game winner and take home the championship denying Gettysburg their second championship in as many years.
The ending of the season was disappointing but the team performed very well and has built a solid foundation for the future. So solid in fact, that Gettysburg will be fielding two teams in the 2011-12 season with one team competing at the DII level.
